What is PRP? Who Is It For? Steps, Anesthesia & PRP Therapy Procedure in NJ

What is PRP Therapy?

PRP Therapy stands for Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy available in New Jersey with Dr. Rapaport. This cosmetic hair loss treatment uses PRP to stimulate and promote hair follicle health to reverse the effects of hair loss. Plasma contains almost five times the number of platelets that can typically be found in blood. The platelets contain certain growth proteins that are responsible for cell regeneration.  Because of these remarkable properties, it is possible to revive damaged or inactive hair follicles and regrow a full head of hair.

Steps to Getting Ready for Treatment

Dr. Rapaport will discuss what you will need to do pre-treatment during the initial consultation. Some other things that you will need to keep in mind are:

  • There is little downtown after PRP therapy. The appointment will only take half of a day and you may resume normal activities immediately after
  • Do not donate blood or plasma at least two to three weeks before undergoing PRP Therapy to ensure you will have an adequate supply for your procedure

One of the most appealing aspects of PRP Therapy is that no anesthesia is needed because the procedure is non-invasive. The entire procedure is no different than donating blood and is not something that is uncomfortable enough to need any sedatives.

PRP New Jersey Therapy Procedure

The PRP procedure in NJ will begin with a nurse drawing between 60 and 100 ml of blood. While you relax in a comfortable lounge chair, the nurse will run the blood through a centrifuge where it will be spun for 15 minutes. The spinning separates all of the different components of blood, including the platelet rich plasma. The PRP is removed while the rest of the blood is discarded.

The second part of the procedure involves transferring the PRP to the scalp. Micro-needling is performed on the area of the scalp where hair loss or hair thinning is occurring. Micro-needling is where a roller instrument uses very small needles to slightly penetrate the skin. This process stimulates the healing process in the scalp because it believes it has endured trauma.

When the micro-needling is finished, the PRP is injected into the scalp in the same area. New hair growth will begin to be seen over the following several weeks.
